The nine pillars of Digital India

The BharatNet project aims to connect all 250,000 gram panchayats through optical fiber, providing affordable broadband to rural citizens. Universal access to mobile connectivity

Public Internet Access Program

  • Online applications and tracking: Moving service delivery platforms online to reduce paperwork and physical visits.
  • Integration of services and platforms: Creating unified platforms like UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) that offer multiple services through a single interface.

e-Kranti: Electronic delivery of services

Electronics manufacturing

This pillar aims to promote electronics manufacturing in India, reducing import dependency and creating employment opportunities. Key targets include:

  • Net zero imports: Achieving a balance between electronics imports and exports by 2030.
  • Production incentives: Offering financial incentives to manufacturers through schemes like Production Linked Incentive (PLI).
  • Manufacturing clusters: Creating specialized zones for electronics manufacturing with shared infrastructure.
  • Skill development: Training the workforce to meet the demands of the electronics manufacturing industry.

IT for jobs

This pillar focuses on training people in smaller towns and villages for IT sector jobs. Initiatives include:

  • Training programs: Skill development courses for rural youth to prepare them for IT and IT-enabled service sector jobs.
  • BPO promotion: Setting up BPO centers in small towns and rural areas to create local employment opportunities.
  • Telecom service provider training: Programs to train individuals for jobs in the telecom sector.

Early harvest programs

This pillar includes short-term projects with quick outcomes. Examples include:

  • IT platform for messages: MyGov.in for citizen engagement.
  • Biometric attendance systems: For government offices to ensure punctuality and accountability.
  • Wi-Fi in universities: Providing high-speed internet access in educational institutions.

Key achievements of Digital India

Digital identity and authentication

Aadhaar, the world’s largest biometric identity system, now covers over 1.3 billion Indians, providing them with a unique, verifiable digital identity. This has enabled e-KYC processes, making service delivery more efficient and reducing identity fraud. The DigiLocker system allows citizens to store and share verified documents electronically, eliminating the need for physical copies.

Digital payments revolution

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has transformed India’s payment landscape, enabling instant, secure, and cost-effective digital transactions. The Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system has streamlined the delivery of government subsidies and benefits, eliminating intermediaries and reducing leakage. The UMANG app provides access to over 1,200 government services through a single platform. e-Hospitals have simplified appointment booking, payment of fees, and access to medical records for patients across the country.

Digital literacy and skill development

The Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA) aims to make 60 million rural households digitally literate. The National Digital Literacy Mission has trained millions of Indians in using digital technologies for everyday purposes. Challenges and the road ahead

Despite its achievements, Digital India faces several challenges that need to be addressed:

Digital divide

While digital penetration has increased significantly, disparities still exist based on geography, income, gender, and education. Rural areas continue to lag behind urban centers in terms of internet connectivity and digital infrastructure. Many citizens, particularly elderly and economically disadvantaged populations, still lack digital literacy skills.

Data privacy and security concerns

As digital adoption increases, so do concerns regarding data privacy and cybersecurity. The need for robust data protection legislation has become increasingly apparent. Cyber threats, including hacking, phishing, and identity theft, pose significant risks to digital infrastructure.

Infrastructure limitations

Reliable electricity supply remains a challenge in many parts of India, affecting digital access. The quality of internet connectivity varies widely across regions, with many areas experiencing slow or unreliable connections. The cost of devices and internet services can be prohibitive for economically disadvantaged populations.

To address these challenges, the Digital India program continues to evolve:
