While mechanization dramatically increased catch volumes and improved market access, it simultaneously pushed artisanal fishers to the margins of an industry they had sustained for generations. Selective adoption of technology

Many traditional fishers adapted by selectively incorporating aspects of mechanization:

The mechanization saga in India’s fishing communities exemplifies the complex relationship between technological change, environmental sustainability, and social justice. While increased productivity and export earnings have been achieved, these gains came at substantial costs to traditional livelihoods, marine ecosystems, and cultural heritage. Moving forward, the challenge lies in developing approaches that balance efficiency with equity and extraction with conservation-ensuring that fishing communities can thrive alongside the resources upon which they depend.
