Minakata’s work anticipates this turn, demonstrating how different ways of knowing can complement rather than contradict each other. His example suggests that effective environmental action requires not just scientific data but also the cultural and spiritual frameworks that give that data meaning and motivate conservation efforts.

The sacred forests that Minakata fought to protect have gained renewed appreciation in contemporary Japan.
