Consider a pin factory, Smith’s famous example: a single worker making pins from start to finish might produce perhaps 20 pins per day. But when the process was divided among multiple workers-one straightening wire, another cutting it, a third pointing it, and so on-the same number of workers could produce 48,000 pins daily.

Time discipline and industrial culture

The factory system introduced something unprecedented in human history: industrial time discipline. Workers had to arrive at specific hours, work at the pace of machines, and follow standardized procedures. Working conditions in early factories were frequently harsh, with long hours, dangerous machinery, and polluted environments.
